Cutting the Cord

We'll I have decided to be brave... we are turning off our cable. GASP!
If you know me well, then you know the list of shows that I DVR on a daily/ weekly basis is a little out of control! Brad and I have decided that our cable bill has gotten a little out of control. $120 bucks a month for cable on 2 tv's is not worth it. Also when your two year old son requests to watch The Big Bang Theory, then it is probably time to step away from the tv!
When I called to cancel, the little old lady on the other end of the line said "but dear, what will you DO without cable?" Her comment immediately had me second guessing the decision, but I pushed through and as of next Monday we will be a cable free home. As for what I will do without cable, well hopefully it wont be too terribly awful! Maybe I will read some of the books piled up on my Kindle.
We decided to keep the internet so that we can stream shows to our TV, as well as watch recent shows online with HULU, and movies with netflix. I have to be able to watch Vampire Diaries, gossip girl, pretty little liars, greys anatomy, project runway, revenge and a long list of others! Has anyone else cut the cord? How do you live cable free? Is there a way to stream the new shows straight to the TV instead of only watching through the computer? These are all things I need to be educated on. I am just relieved I wont have to miss out on any episodes with my favorite Salvatore brother. Only 30 more days... not that I'm counting or anything.

  1. Get an Apple TV! You can watch stuff from netflix and itunes and maybe Hulu too (could be wrong though) on your TV. We love ours! They run about $100.

  2. Welcome to the dark side. =) I've had cable for all of 6 months over the last 6 years. Don't miss it. Anything I want to watch that's on primetime, I just watch online a couple days later.

  4. We've been without cable for about 3 years now and honestly don't miss it much. With Netflix and streaming shows online, there is still plenty to watch. We have an HDMI cable to connect our computer screen to our TV so we can watch shows on the big screen.

  6. We've been cable free for over a year now. My husband built a computer to use as a dedicated media server. We just stream whatever we want now.

You can do it! Once the first few weeks pass, you'll be fine.

  7. We have a little HD antennae that gives us about 10 channels for free. Which honestly is just enough because between that and our internet (thus Netflix streaming) we really don't need more to watch. Its really pretty freeing actually though the inability to pause has led us to a few moments of OH DEAR HOW DO WE POP POPCORN?!? Before we remember that's what those commercials are for!

  8. We have that same little HD antennae and it is white and isn't any bigger than a sheet of paper. It gets us about $15 channels! My husband got it at Fleet Farm! We use Netflix & Hulu and stream it through our Wii! It has been two years since we went cable free and it isn't bad at all!

  14. We lived without cable for 3 years! We bought this hd satellite thing at target that gave us fox, abc, nbc, cbs, & 4 pbs channels. It cost about $75 but was worth it! We also had netflix & hulu.

    Good luck!
