Easy Knit Christmas Stocking Pattern!

Last Christmas I decided that I would take on the project of knitting Christmas stockings for our family. I started looking around the internet for patterns. Some were way too complicated (I am a pretty basic knitter) and the rest were not what I was looking for. I quickly realized that I was going to have to buy a pattern or come up with my own. Well, if you have been reading my blog long enough, then you probably know that I am a bit cheap frugal and if there is something I can figure out on my own, well I am going to do it! I came across a few various patterns that I combined and changed. The basic pattern I used came from here.

The large stockings were knitted with doubled yarn and big needles. With the smaller stockings I used single yarn and a 9 or 10 needle. The good thing about the stocking pattern, is that they turn out great no matter what size yarn or needles you use.  The pattern is very simple and they also knit very quickly. If you can knit and purl, then you can knit this. I was able to complete each one in about 2 hours.

EDIT: I HAVE RECEIVED A LOT OF QUESTIONS REGARDING THE INCREASES. I HAVE REWRITTEN THE INSTRUCTIONS, BUT ALSO CHECK OUT THIS TUTORIAL ON INCREASING AS IT WORKS WELL HERE. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ01r1hWGks

Fold stocking with right sides facing and sew from the toe stopping at the cuff. Turn right side out and sew cuff together. Fold cuff over and voila!

To hang the stockings I made a loop of yarn and secured it by sewing it to the underside of the cuff and pulling the loop through the knitting.

*If you would like to sew the smaller version of the stocking and want wider bands of stripes, change your color increments to 6 rows instead of 4.

ENJOY!!!!

  3. I am new at knitting and have been looking for a pattern that I would actually be able to do. THANK YOU!! I wanted to make mine a little bigger and increased the cast on from 26 to 36. Do I have to change the subsequent rows too?

    1. Hi Emma. I am really not sure how it would affect the pattern... I would think that you would just have ten additional stitches but I'm not 100% sure. I think the easiest way to make it bigger would be using really large needles and thick yarn. I'd love to see how they turn out!

  5. Amie, Since I doubled up my red yarn I used 3 I believe. One white and 2 red. I'm pretty sure I always had extra after finishing one as well.

  6. Thank you! do you remember what size needle you used ?

  7. I'm sorry for another comment. I'm only doing beginning work too, but did you just carry the yarn when you went on to the other color?

  8. I did carry the yarn. You move between rows so quickly I think it is the easiest way. As for needle size I believe it was a 15 or 17? One of the biggest that hobby lobby sells. I'm sorry I'm not more help, all of my knitting stuff is currently buried in storage.

  10. Amie, it was all from Joann's I want to say the white was the Vanna White brand... the red I don't remember because I went around looking for the best red in the store.

  17. Since this is not knit in the round, is this just one flat side? Does the pattern need to be knit again, but mirrored? I Love this pattern! It's the ONLY stocking pattern that I've found that I like :) I plan on knitting these for my family by Christmas

    1. It is knit flat but you are knitting both sides at the same time. Once complete you will stitch up one side. They are a really quick knit, I did them at night while watching TV!

  24. These look adorable, but am curious....why did you double up on the red rows? Does it make a very big difference? Thanks.

  25. How large is the completed stocking? Thank you

  26. These are absolutely adorable and I want to make them, but I'm confused about one thing. The pattern says to cast on 26 stitches but on row 31 it says to knit 12, increase one, increase one, knit 12. This makes 26 stitches, but you already have 26? Should it say to knit 13 instead here, or am I missing something? As a beginning knitter, I am not sure what to do here. Thanks for your help!

    1. you will be knitting 12, and then in the next 2 stitches you will increase in each. I have found a tutorial for increasing that should work for you. I believe I do my increases a bit differently but it provides the same result. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VZ01r1hWGks

  27. Your pattern is a lifesaver! I have been looking for a pattern exactly like this for an hour. I've never knitted regular socks so anything with more than two needles freaks me out. :) Thank you!
