I think I've lost my mind... (Cloth diapers)

I'm considering cloth diapering. Someone please stop me... or tell me why you like it!

Thanks!

  1. I'm thinking we may do it too!
Mr. Science Geek is all about being environmentally friendly, and it will save tons of money. I know that's all our grandparents had and sometimes you have to wonder... If it ain't broke, why fix it? Keep me posted!

  2. I absolutely LOVE cloth diapering! We use the bumgenius 3.0, and it's incredibly user-friendly (easy for husbands and babysitters). We have 24 diapers, which is enough so that I can wash every other day. It's not really more work than disposables, aside from washing and stuffing them (but you don't have to run out and buy new ones every week!), and we estimate that we'll save about $1800 using them on Knox. They're adorable, way more absorbent that disposables, more eco-friendly, economical (in the long run... pricier up-front) and just generally pretty awesome.

You just have to bring a wet bag in your diaper bag so that you can tote your dirty diapers home (I have never had an issue with these bags smelling or getting gross) to wash. Feel free to ask if you have any questions. Kudos to you for considering it!

  3. Oh, and breast fed poop is water soluble, so you just dump them straight into the washing machine. When he starts to eat solids, you'll need a sprayer or to use flushable liners.

  4. Um, great for Earth Day, but um, no. Sorry, disposable for me. Soooo much easier, in a multitude of ways. :)

  5. DON'T DO IT! Just go to Sam's and buy the Kirkland's Best diapers. . .

  6. completely agree with jessica. we don't exclusively cloth diaper, but are dabbling in it. i also like bumgenius.
another option...gdiaper. they have biodegradible liners in addition to the cloth liners.
    just a thought! :)

  7. Oh Lordy! Be careful. We just decided to try out cloth diapering. I just got my first cloth dipes in the mail yesterday. I'm not even sure if I will like it or stay committed to it, but I already want to buy like 100 cloth diapers because they're so darn adorable! It's addictive.

  8. Don't do it. The washing of the diapers is a PITA. My best friend tried it and she hated every minute of it. They would leak all over the place and she was doing laundry all the time because she had to sterilize her washer after each wash of the diapers. IMO, there are LOTS of other ways to go green that are much more sanitary.

I'm still leery, but she seems to be having a great experience with them.

  10. Cloth is SUPER easy! We use flushable liners so poos just get flushed away! Velcro/Snaps mean they are easy on/off.

  11. I LOVE cloth diapering! I thought a friend was crazy until I actually did it and realized how easy it was. My suggestion is to buy a couple of different brands and not put all your eggs in one basket. I prefer snaps to velcro because the velcro is more of a pain to wash (they get all hung up on each other). I say give it a try, they are cute and as a mother to a boy it is fun to put cute fluffy butts on him :)

  12. Go to Jillians Drawers and get the trial (I'm sure you already know about it if you're considering cloth diapering). Try it for a few weeks and if you don't like it, just send them back!

We started cloth diapering our son when he was about 4 months and I love it! We have Bum Genius 3.0, BG organic all in ones, Happy Heiny one size and Fuzzi Bunz. Out of those, my favorites are the BG organic because they're really trim and I don't have to stuff anything. I also just recently bought Flip diapers which I love, they're so easy to use and very convenient.

We've never had any stink or rash issues and I don't have issues with getting them really clean. We have a top load washer though and I have heard horror stories from ladies who have front loaders. The main complaint seems to be not getting enough water in the machine to really clean the diapers. It really comes down to finding the right wash routine and detergent that works for you. Some never have problems and some have to try a few things.

Sorry this was long! Best of luck to you on whatever you decide to do! :)

  13. Hey there! Just found your blog this morning after writing my own post about my experiences with cloth diapering. If you're interested, you can read about it HERE. We've been happy with our switch and have saved hundreds of dollars by going the cheapest route. That's not to knock the fancier cloth diapers, just to say that we couldn't afford them at the time.

    Good luck on your decision!!

  15. Hey mama! I never used cloth diapers, but my mom did on me and she swears by them. Wish I could help you more, but its kinda depressing that I have not had a baby in diapers in 8 years *tear*. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! xoxo

p.s. have I told you how much I love your new header? Love it!

  16. Wow!!! I could never do it haha. There's just something about changing a diaper at the mall, putting it in your purse, and taking it home to wash out the poop LOL But I totally wish you luck on it!

Wow... I just sounded totally un-green.

  17. OMG do it do it do it! I'm pregnant with my first and planning on cloth diapering, myself. First, the diapers are SO cute! Second, you'll save so much money... We're saving over $2000 in baby's first 2 years of life alone, and that isn't including what we'll save if baby #2 eventually uses the same dipes! Third, they really aren't that hard to wash... There is lots of info available out there about how to cloth diaper and wash the dipes. One thing I'd definitely recommend is using cloth wipes!

I know, it sounds icky... BUT if you use disposable wipes, you'll have to separate the diaper and wipe before you put it in the wash, you'll still have the ongoing expense, and you can still end up with diaper rash!

Cloth wipes are great. Keep them in a wipes warmer with a little bit of warm water & some tea tree/lavender oil, and then you just toss them in the wash with the cloth diaper. No mess, no fuss!

I actually just reviewed a GREAT cloth diaper I found on my blog. They're only $8.75 each, and they're "one piece" style diapers - just as easy to use as disposables! Check it out - http://www.crunchybusiness.com/fluffy-mail

    See you there!

  18. You definitely do not have to sterilize your washer after washing diapers! No one would do it if it were that much trouble!
