I'm running low... well not really. I have milk, but it isnt flowing out at the speed of a super soaker like Keating wants it to... apparently. He gets restless, starts kicking, flailing his arms, screaming. (Im sorry if I bore you with talks of his screaming... hopefully the end is in sight)
Brad's wise aunt made the suggestion "maybe he is still hungry?" Well I had thought that myself, but I figured he is gaining weight and he stops eating when he gets enough. I talked to the Dr. about it, she assured me he was getting plenty.
QUITE the opposite actually!
Yesterday I began an experiment. I decided to nurse, and then when he acted frustrated or done, I would have a bottle to give him. Well by golly, he gulped it down. I did it at the next feeding, and the next... same deal. This pattern continued throughout the day and I began again today.
Today, I decided "lets add in a little cereal and see how he likes that". MILK DRUNK! He hasnt gotten milk drunk since he was a wee little 6lb baby fresh from the hospital. For those of you that dont know what milk drunk is... its where he eats so much that he just stops, and stares off into space. Totally full, about to bust, but oh so content!
Yall, I think my pissy kid is just HUNGRY! I was feeding him every three hours or whenever he acted "hungry" but for a kid that screams so much, we didnt know he was STILL hungry. Brad would say "Is he hungry?" and I'd usually snap back annoyed "HE JUST ATE!" But now I know that he wants more than what he is getting from me.
I may regret saying this, but he hasnt even had a meltdown since I started feeding him more. Now, I know Im probably going to get flack for giving him cereal already. He is 16 weeks on Saturday, which in my opinion is 4 months... right? I honestly dont even care, say what you want. If you came into my house and heard this kid wail, I'm pretty confident you would be shoveling cereal in his mouth too!
I still want to try to keep breast feeding, but it is getting harder because each time his frustration increases. I am pumping to keep up with his demand and he is getting a little formula in there too. Since we are getting so close to really starting solid foods I think I can hang on a little while longer. I said I'd go 6 months in the beginning, and I'm going to do it one way or the other.

How many diapers is he soaking a day? Basically how many times is he peeing?
ReplyDeleteWow, i can't believe he is 14 weeks already! I feel like you just posted that he was born..time flies :-) I hope the extra bottle and some cereal keep working to keep your little man happy. We gave our son cereal just before he turned 4 months old for the same reason and it worked great.
ReplyDeleteI started feeding my boy cereal a few weeks before he turned four months old..he was giving all the signs that he was ready and he was! Every baby is different and you just have to listen to what YOUR little guy tells you. Hope the cereal keeps working its magic:)
ReplyDeleteJust in case his fussing continues, has your pedi ever suggested that you eliminate dairy from your diet? It sounds like you're going through a lot of what we went through a few months ago... once I eliminated all dairy from my diet, which was pretty hard, my daughter was like a totally different baby.
ReplyDeleteI tried cereal in a bottle with my son around 3 1/2 - 4 mths old - same story... he seemed hungry still and I didn't think I was producing enough milk. The cereal actually didn't make a difference in our case, but I began nursing him longer and sometimes supplementing on top of that with formula and that kept him happy and content. I hope your little guy stays content for you!!!
ReplyDeletebride4life he pees a lot. Ive never really counted how much?
ReplyDeleteI have a daughter who is eight months old and we had the same problem. The biggest thing I've learned since becoming a mother is that you have to find out what works for you and your baby, all those "rules" you hear are more guidelines. I also had to start giving my baby girl cereal at that same time, so don't feel too bad about it. Your not the only one that's for sure. I was almost in tears the other week reading your post about how he cries all the time. My daughter did the same exact thing, but they would never diagnose her with anything. One day I must have started doing something that made her happy. What, I'm still not sure. Now she's a very happy baby. Good Luck!
ReplyDeleteI bet you are right! I don't think cereal at 4 months is a no-no. My nephew was eating it at 4 months and ate smashed up avocados and sweet potatoes at 5 months. He is fine, a "normal" 6 month old baby.
ReplyDeleteI hate it when people are judgy of other moms! every baby is different and you are doing what is right for YOUR baby! :)
ReplyDeleteGirl there is nothing wrong with giving him boob, formula, and cereal! I did it and my baby girl grew just perfectly. Your his Mom and you can do what you want :)
ReplyDeleteOMG! I remember when my son was "milk drunk" so funny!
ReplyDeleteIf you are worried about your milk supply...try taking the natural supplement "More milk plus". It totally worked for me...maybe it would work for you!?!
Honestly, as long as you feed your baby and you are both happy and healthy... That makes you the best mommy ever. I too had to supplement with formula and suddenly had a super happy baby. Do what your mommy gut tells you and let the nay sayers well, you know where they can go. Good job making it this far BF that is a big accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteMy little man is a bit over 2mths and I had to do the same thing (start supplementing in some formula). I found that at his 3pm feeding he would fuss tons - SO it hit me finally that maybe he was just hungry. Now I feed him 4oz of formula at his 3pm feeding and by his 6pm I'm totally filled up again! Whatever works right?! :)
ReplyDeleteOnly you can know what is good for your little one so do whatever you gotta do!! Besides a happy baby is better than a fussy & screaming baby anyday & if the cereal makes him happy then again go for it!!!
ReplyDeleteIn the "olden days" when I was a baby, all babies got cereal very early!!!!!! And I turned out just fine! They used to make this bottle with a plunger on one end that was called an "infant feeder" and you could push the end and the food would flow out. You grandma used to layer up the cereal and baby food for Pru! I dont think they make these any more for several reasons :) Kinda gross if you think about it~!
ReplyDeleteI believe a healthy baby who is getting the correct nutrition should be peeing 4 or 5 times a day....so if your baby is peeing a lot....that is a good thing and he is getting what he needs....sounds like you are doing exactly what needs to be done....congrats smarty pants mamma :)

ReplyDeleteJay ate cereal at four months - totally cool I'd say :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd I'm so glad you might have figured out what's wrong - I hope your little one stays HAPPY and full now! :-)
